The Polymath School, Mumbai

The first Project-Based Learning (PBL) school in the region, The Polymath School accommodates students from Nursery to Grade 12. EDI’s design for the school tries to incorporate the project-based aspect. Multi-functional spaces have been provided throughout the school buildings, and outdoor usage has been maximized. Indoor spaces, too, have been kept flexible yet compact, to achieve maximum usage of the spaces. A mix of formal and informal learning areas have been crafted for smaller learning communities, which can be combined if there are group learning activities.

Visual arts and Learning Resource Centers rooms have been given much attention. A display of students’ works can be seen on the walls, categorized according to different niches. Architecturally, the small performance and collaboration zones take the pressure off the 400 seater hall, which is also used as an indoor ground for badminton and half-basketball. Other key features for Kindergarten include a sensory fountain play zone, a large sandpit with unconventional and challenging play space along with creative play equipment over soft surfaces.

For Middle and High School, a large amphitheatre acts as an informal group collaborative zone. It is integrated with the public cafe and small group performance space, to create an environment of entertainment and playfulness. Apart from sports, unconventional play structures provide enough challenges for older students. And as for the aesthetic value of the campus, a large grove with multiple fruit and flowering trees, vegetables, ayurvedic and botanical plants add hugely to that.
