B. D. Somani International School, Mumbai
A school is actually a home away from home for any student. During student’s life most of the waking hours of any student are spent at school hence, the school is not just a facility but a composition of various aspects which contributes to a holistic learning process. With this starting point we developed the design concept, “the school as a city”, inspired mainly from Portuguese School Architecture and “tree of life” from Hindu mythology which is the base of Indian education system. The school can be thought of as a small city which provides an understanding of the learning space under a system of urban elements such as trees, courtyards, intersections, water bodies and buildings. The distinction between spaces – open and closed; public and private; individual and collective – establishes qualities, responsibilities and hierarchies. These relationships are essential to provide a structure in which students can integrate their individuality in a diverse and heterogeneous community.
In this the learning units are spread along creating “streets” (corridor) and the central atrium functions as a “courtyard”- core of the city or a “city square” – a central meeting place in the school.
Each floor can be seen as a “neighborhood” where buildings are organized around smaller squares working as a watering holes where all the students can meet and interact.
