American School of Bombay-BKC Campus, Mumbai
As the education consultant and design architect for one of India’s premier international schools, EDI was commissioned to design an 80,000 sq. ft. elementary school campus and renovate the existing township-based main campus for the American School of Bombay (ASB).
The challenge: transforming a complex urban setting—originally designed for commercial and residential use, including office spaces, a shopping mall, auditorium, and cricket field—into a dynamic, innovative educational environment. Rather than working against these constraints, EDI saw them as an opportunity to rethink traditional school design.
Departing from the standard four-walled classrooms, EDI introduced “home pods”—flexible learning spaces made from movable walls of cabinetry on casters. This modular approach promotes adaptability, visibility, and engagement, allowing students to interact with shared commons and satellite libraries located on each floor. The result is a highly collaborative and student-centered campus, where space actively supports exploration, creativity, and diverse learning styles.
Through this bold and adaptive design, ASB’s campuses now embody the school’s progressive educational philosophy and serve as a model for modern learning in urban environments.
