Mount Litera Zee School, Jamshedpur

Project Description

Paradigm Shift to a Modern Design

Mount Litera Zee School is located in Jamshedpur a.k.a Tatanagar- the largest city in Jharkhand and a major industrial zone in Eastern India. It is a K-12 CBSE school in 3.05 acres of campus that can cater to 1800 Students.

The school was redesigned to its current form from a conventional factory model of double loaded corridor based school design. Since the building construction of the concrete core was already completed, EDA design team has taken special care to accommodate learning spaces into the base structural shell. Many challenges were faced by the design team to integrate a flexible design with the existing services. Other hurdles included negotiating internal multilevel spaces on each floor. Since the site was uneven with steep contours, working out seamless connections in the outdoor areas involved careful detailing of landscape.

Various sport activities such as outdoor badminton, basketball & a mini swimming pool were accommodated. In order to emphasize on naturalist learning, several outdoor / semi outdoor spaces were created at multiple levels connected to the indoor commons. Innovative wall treatments act as surfaces for displaying student work and task furniture designed by EDA encourages project based learning. Specific educational concepts & illustrations were incorporated into the flooring patterns to act as educational tools. Indoor glazing facilitates integration of theme based graphics enhancing the educational value to a large extent.

To break the conventional feel of “THE TYPICAL SCHOOL BUILDING” the external façade of this building is designed with colourful schemes. The external façade is treated with simple techniques that provide an impressive look for the school compared with the earlier façade.
